What’s up y’all!! Lawd, it’s July and it’s too damn hot! I am not a fan of heat at ALL. Imma just quote the legendary Boy George, “Summer is the enemy of fashion” LOLOLOL. Anyway, we want to sincerely give thanks and gratitude for allowing us to get in your ear one mo’ time! We appreciate the support and the love and we DON’T take it for granted! We got some HEAT for y’all this month, so let’s get right down to business, shall we?

Our featured song for this month is : Rimarkable – I’m In Trouble (Vocal Mix)  Lemme tell y’all a lil’ bit about this woman here – Rimarkable is not only a NASTY dj, having appeared in various high profile venues such as Funkbox NYC, the infamous Boiler Room, and her own internationally recognized “Everybody Random” party, but she is also an amazing writer/vocalist! Seriously, y’all got to go here to really get into what she gives – she has NO brakes! BUT…I digress – let’s get back to the track… “I’m In Trouble” is her debut on Detroit producer Wajeed‘s new Dirt Tech Reck label (if he sounds familiar, he designed album art for Slum Village as well as producing Dwele and working with Ceee-lo Green, Mayer Hawthorne, and John Legend). Rimarkable also bears the distinction of being his first signee to the new label, and if this track is any indicator of what’s in store, then y’all got my attention!

In all honesty I couldn’t just choose one song, tho – there’s another track on here that REALLY deserves a big up – and that’s DJ Applejac – Adinkra ft. Miles Bonny  Applejac has been putting out FIRE on the Shadeleaf label (founded and run by thatmanmonkz)! Ironically, I first met Applejac AT Rimarkable’s “Everybody Random” party a few years back where he was the guest DJ! “Adinkra feat. Miles Bonny” is pure excellence. Having spun “G.A. Tech” in last month’s mix, I already made up my mind I was gonna spin “Adinkra” this month! DJ’s – y’all want these tracks! I’m not asking you – I’m telling you!

We got a bunch of other treats on here for you, too. We got a cut from Louie Vega’s long anticipated “NYC Disco” album (omg, this is not only a well-produced and curated album, but it also serves as TEACHING material! Listen and LEARN IT!). We got some underground madness from yet another living House icon, David Morales, with his “The Red Zone Vol. 4” album. This month we featured “Kontrol, Pt. 1”, but honestly the whole album is just unfuckwithable. You remember those sick tracks that would cause you to show your entire ass in the club but you never knew what they were called? Yeah, Red Zone Vol. 4 is an album full of that shit, LOL. We got a HOT remix of Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” by Freeky & Shaunic, as well as some HEAT from Tedd Patterson off the Launch label!

…and last – but certainly not least – we got some new music from yours, truly – LibraClassic! off the Zodiac Thump Music label! This is a re-edit of “Tuff Yard” – a track that first appeared on “Lessons In Dub Vol. I“. We’ve taken it, chopped it up, transposed it and ended up with “Tuff Yard – The Rhumba Edits”. This track will be available exclusively on Traxsource on 7/3/18 (available to the rest of the world on 7/13/18), so be on the look out for it!

As usual – with songs that I consider “edits”, I also credit the original artist because – let’s be honest – if it wasn’t for them, you wouldn’t actually have a track, so – you know *shrugs*.

Enjoy! 🙂

What’s up, y’all! It’s June, it’s Summer and the outdoor activities are popping here in NYC so let’s kick it off right! But FIRST, we want to extend our heartfelt gratitude at the way y’all are receiving these mixes! I even got an anonymous tip in my virtual tip jar (below)!!! How cool is that?? LOLOLOL – no, seriously – I don’t mind going the extra mile for y’all because I don’t take your support for granted! So without further ado, our featured song for this week is (drumroll, please…)

DJ Beloved, Mcleod – “What You Won’t Do For Love (Jihad Muhammad Remix)” – ladies n’ gennelmens – THIS is how you remake a song. Mcleod really does justice to the original while also putting his own flair on the classic. With DJ Beloved on the production (he’s really been putting out heat – it’s really not a game with him!) and the legendary Jihad Muhammad on the remix, this is just one of those tracks that will be in rotation for a minute, so y’all might as well settle in – this one’s gonna go for awhile, LOL!

We also got some battle heat from Rob Flawless, a Layabouts remix of a Nathan Haines house classic, some heat from the Arawakan label and sneak peak at the latest joint from Zodiac Thump Music! As time goes on, you’re constantly learning as a producer and sometimes you look back and say to yourself, “this needs a re-boot”. We released “Tuff Yard” about 3 years ago (it’s on Traxsource and pretty much everywhere else), and I have always wanted to revisit this track – so I finally did it! We present to you “Tuff Yard (Libra’s Transposed Rhumba Edit)” for your consideration (we’ll have a release date very soon!).

The Zodiac Thump! Season 2, Episode 3!

The Zodiac Thump, Episode 3

…what’s up, y’all! Spring is here and we’ve got our mid-month installment of The Zodiac Thump! This is Episode 3 of Season 2 and we’re hyped about the whole damn thing! Of course, all of our previous mixes in the Zodiac Thump series are still available to download or stream at your leisure! Check below for playlist (with links), and links to our various podcast locations! If you like what you’re hearing, you can download it free, but there’s also a TIP JAR down there because – well, because a few of you have actually asked and most importantly – why not? LOL – with all that being said, let’s get on with our mid-month blog…

Let me start off by stating – we’ve decided to start instituting a featured song in the Zodiac Thump DJ mixes and the reason is simple: the ARTISTS ARE IMPORTANT! Let me repeat that for the nosebleed section: THE ARTISTS ARE IMPORTANT! The time for spinning music in a contrived cult of secrecy is OVER! I have been caping for this for years (I have NEVER put up a mix without a playlist: EVER!), and I am glad that streaming sites such as MixCloud are enforcing this new policy. Last week, many DJs awoke to find that their MixCloud mixes would not play. I didn’t even bother to check mine because I already knew why they wouldn’t play – NO PLAYLIST. The artist typically suffers the most because of this -but not in MY mix – no ma’am! With that being said, our featured song for this mix is (drumroll, please)….

Brian Power feat. Kathy Kosins – “Can We Pretend” (Smooth Mix) – what can I say about Kathy Kosins? I mean, it’s like Phyllis Hyman and Teena Marie formed Voltron and out came this woman! Not only is her voice sublime, but the production quality is so amazing that you should have no trouble throwing this in your sets! Other notable tracks to listen for in this mix are MDW & Harry Soto bringing you “Power Of Prayer” – a deep, religious-themed track with an uplifting message on top of a KILLER beat and this nasty little battle joint from Lilac Jeans called “Don’t You Know” (which will dominate this summer, I PROMISE you!).

We also got some new stuff from Louie Vega, including a tribute to the legendary Voodoo Ray (a moment please…                                                                                                             …Thank You). We got some new stuff from the legendary Doug Lazy (he still got it!), some unreleased stuff from my bredren Kev Dot Kruz (I don’t even think y’all ready for what he finna hit y’all with…)…and as usual, if there’s some tracks in here that are more legitimately described as EDITS, I will rename them for their original artists and tag the “producer” as a remixer (I do this on my page, but will use credit as listed on MixCloud and similar sites). Don’t like it? Fight me.

Disclaimer: towards the end of this journey, I lapse into a throwback fit that I’m sure my veteran House heads will lose their entire shit over, LOL…

The Zodiac Thump! Season 2, Episode 2!

The Zodiac Thump, Episode 2

What up, folks! As you can see – I’ve changed my mind about my previous mixes (I do this often – it’s a Libra thing, LOL). I originally planned to delete them (and I have deleted some), but decided to leave most of them up (since they are still being downloaded and streamed!), so continue to enjoy and download them at your leisure!

Now back to the present – here’s another installment of the all new Zodiac Thump – Episode 2! We start this one off with a remix from Brooklyn’s own DJ/Producer/Remixer Mikki Afflick (Soul Sun Soul, Afro Sun). Nina Simone once said, “You can’t help it. An artist’s duty, as far as I’m concerned, is to reflect the times.” – and Mikki does just that with her remix of Groove Junkies’ “We Rise” with Opolopo and vocalist Solara! As usual, links for this and most material used will be made readily available in the playlist (just click on the titles!). We’ve got new music from Deep Sole Syndicate, DJ Romain, Toshi, and others…BUT – there’s one thing…

RANT: There are many MANY producers out here taking classic tracks, re-editing them, and selling them as original works (such tracks are marked with an asterik *). These tracks have gone way beyond sampling to the point where said track would cease to exist absent the original track used. My solution?

Well, as you will see in the playlist, I’ve taken the liberty of renaming such tracks to their ORIGINAL artist names and crediting the remixer/editor in parenthesis. Think that’s disrespectful? Not nearly as disrespectful as taking someone else’s music, looping it, adding bells and whistles, then passing it off as your own. Honestly, the sampling part isn’t even what eats away at me – it’s how “producers” are literally passing whole songs off as their own after adding a 4/4 kick and a hi-hat. I mean, really – some cases are so blatant, that when I would Shazam them, the ORIGINAL song would come up!

Now some of these edits (because that’s really what they are) are actually pretty good, so I’ve included them in the mix, but there will be TWO links next to them – a link to the remixer/editors version and a link to the ORIGINAL VERSION or inspiration.  This is done for two VERY important reasons:

  • a.) To educate those who may not be old enough to remember the importance and significance of these original recordings and
  • b.) To give proper credit (even if not monetary) to the original artists, who – in most of these cases – did the hard work with actual instruments and without the help of a modern DAW (Digital Audio Workstation, ie; Cubase, Ableton, Logic, etc.) and are hardly ever being credited for their work.

In cases where it is unclear whether original music has been used but the sound is similar enough to the original (Robin Thicke anyone??), the SAME thing will occur (2 links).

Don’t like it? FIGHT ME.

PLEASE NOTE: To avoid confusion, remixer/editor will be credited correctly on public sites such as MixCloud, Podomatic, etc. (END RANT)
