….aaaaaand we’re back! Last month we brought you Spring Warfare and this month we bring you Spring Warfare Part TWO! And we got some treats for you! Let’s get started with our feature tracks, shall we?

Weaving Genres Vol. Two: Unreleased Versions

Our first feature track – well, it’s not so much a featured “track” as it is a couple of tracks from a featured compilation! This month we spotlight Hector Romero’s “Weaving Genres Vol. 2: Unreleased Versions“! This 18 track compilation features artists such as Paso Doble DJ Vivona, Satoshi Tomie, Quentin Harris – and many other notable contributions from industry vets like David Morales to up and coming industry blazers such as Mikki Afflick and Ritmo Y Tumbao! Speaking of which – the first selection we decided to snatch off this amazing compilation is none other than “Thunder Drum Dance feat. Ritmo Y Tumbao” by Mikki Afflick with a deep, rolling bassline reminiscent of Ecstasy’s “Don’t Play Me Raw” or Hercules “7 Ways” followed by “Dejalo Que Salga” by Peppe Citarella & Mijangos. Honestly, you could set fire to the dancefloor just spinning from this compilation alone! Look for more selections from this compilation in future mixes!

For our second feature – it’s not so much a track as it appears to be somewhat of a movement... seriously, can we talk about the genius of Chicago Afrobeat Project????? Some music touches your gut, some beats reach your feet…Chicago Afrobeat Project manages to reach down and touch the pulse of the ancestors. Indigenous, yet up to date and innovative, the “Future Rootz” album is another one that can be played head to toe. With Sol Power All Stars on the Remix, “Cut The Infection” delivers, punching through the crowd as a beat to request. I would STRONGLY suggest copping this!

This mix – like pretty much all of my mixes – tends to do exactly what Hector referenced in the title of his compilation – and that is to weave genres. This mix features everything from Soulful to Afro to Tech to Techno – it’s pretty much all in there. We got tracks from Sevader, Juanito, BLAQWELL, Todd Terry, Diezel, we got a couple joints off the Quantize Miami Sampler Compiled & Mixed by DJ Spen on here (#1, #11) – and much more!  As usual – free download, so enjoy!

Enjoy the mix folks and download it at your leisure! Make sure you go to the official Zodiac Thump Music page and click “like” for news, freebies, and the latest from Zodiac Thump Music!

Hey, everybody! We apologize for the brief hiatus, but we are BACK – and guess what? We brought WEAPONS.

Our feature track for this mix is none other than Ralf Gum f. Monique Bingham – “Claudette (Album Version)” – a tribute to Claudette Colvin, a nurse and pioneer of the Civil Rights movement. Colvin is widely known for refusing to give up her seat to a white woman on a segregated bus nearly a year before her more popular contemporary and face of the movement, Rosa Parks. Black leaders refused to acknowledge her pioneering act of defiance due to her being an unwed expectant mother (reportedly by a married man) at the time of her arrest at age 15.

In Philip Hoose’s book, “Claudette Colvin: Twice Towards Justice“, Colvin said, “My mother told me to be quiet about what I did. She told me to let Rosa be the one: white people aren’t going to bother Rosa, they like her

Claudette Colvin

Colvin suffered in so many ways from both white people and the people that were supposed to be there for her (you know – Black  people), that it brings tears to your eyes just reading her story. I’ve always thought highly of Monique Bingham, but now I have a new found “awe” of her depth. Thank you, Monique – for acknowledging this amazing womanLove this whole album!

Another track I wanted to talk about is “Wele” by Brad Machado. Seriously, this is not even about just the track – it’s about ALL of the material coming from the Arawakan label. This is an example of TIMELESS music – this came out last year, but DEMANDED to be in the mix – even among all the new material from Arawakan that I have to sift through. THAT’S how you build legacy. Big shout to the beautiful husband and wife team – Vic and Nena Hernandez – when you hear these names, you are hearing Arawakan! In addition to that dope Ralf Gum track, this month we also bring you music from Hondo Vega, Doug Gomez, DeMajor, Ray MD, and many more! A little soulful, a little afro, a little classic house, a little techno…it’s all in there! As usual – free download, so enjoy!

Enjoy the mix folks and download it at your leisure! Make sure you go to the official Zodiac Thump Music page and click “like” for news, freebies, and the latest from Zodiac Thump Music!

Quincy Jones f. Patti Austin – Betcha Wouldn’t Hurt Me (A LibraClassic! Edit)

Patti_New

Patti_Download

…Betcha Wouldn’t Hurt Me by Patti Austin, as featured on the legendary album “The Dude” by the iconic Quincy Jones…one of my favorite tracks, but it wasn’t long enough for me, you know? I figured I’d do an edit, add some very subtle instruments to fill it out and throw it out there for me and other like-minded DJ’s to use!

…Initially this was on Soundcloud, but you know how they do…listen, folks – these edits are NEVER for sale. I know there are folks out here selling them, but not me…I do this for gigs, to showcase my production/editing skill, and to BIG UP Zodiac Thump Music! I will NEVER sell these edits/remixes unless licensed to do so…links to purchase the original artist’s work will be readily available…

Watch the Documentary Below!

Good morning/afternoon/evening, y’all…just wanted to jot down a little note to let you know that my tribute to Malcolm X is up on the blog and links are available everywhere! This is not a booty shaking, beat driven escapade. This is jazz driven. This is knowledge driven.

I initially meant to throw some sound bytes to some music, but after ideas started demanding a stage, this project took on a life of it’s own. I meant to have this on Malcolm’s birthday, but what I had in mind proved to be too overwhelming…but it had to be done, so I just took my time and did it right…

This isn’t so much a mix, as it is a journey – this mix tells a story. A movie for your ears, if you will. I have taken liberal chunks of the documentary “Make It Plain”. This documentary was created and released in 1993-94 and is narrated by Alfre Woodard. It has commentary from notable figures in the black community such as Maya Angelou, Sonia Sanchez, Dr. John Henrik Clarke, and Alex Haley. This audiography is also augmented with various speeches that I am blessed to have in order to tell this story. Lots of things have been left out, but I’m hoping it will still serve it’s purpose.

So. I hope you like it, however, to be perfectly honest – if no one heard this but me, it would be one of my favorite mixes! It’s a mix that is done more for me than you, LOL…however, I likes to share – so enjoy!
