….heeeey, y’all! So the summer is OVER (thank GOD), and we kick the Fall off right with the Libra season! It looks like Libras are winning HARD this season and I am SO psyched to be in that number! So let’s get down to business, shall we?

Our first feature track is “Dominique Fils-Aime – Good Feeling (Atjazz & D-Malice Vocal Dub)”  with none other than the legendary Atjazz on the remix along with D-Malice on the remix! Listen, I know everybody’s caught up in this “Good Feeling” remix – it’s an awesome segue track or even an amazing starter, but let’s not ignore the rest of the remix ep!  Atjazz shows off again on the “Sun Rise” remix and the legendary Fred Everything throws his hat in the ring with his remix of “Free Dom”. You will hear the rest of this EP featured heavily on future mixes!

Typically – as the mix goes on – I like to transition from Soulful and Deep to Tech and Techno to really pay homage to the depth of the House field and to ramp up the energy, but this time the mix was a little short so I didn’t get a chance to go in like I normally would have (I’ll make it up, I promise!) , So without further ado, allow me to introduce the second standout track for this month Oliver Knight – Crying Out (Praying Woman)“.  It looks this will be another one of those “insert female gospel singer here and hope for the best” tracks which are generally hit or miss, depending on the production. This is one of those hits…but just barely! As Tech House goes – minus the sample – this track is that remarkable.. This is one of those productions where the sample literally makes and saves the track from being labeled “filler”. Not to mention the fact that awesome mixing, mastering, and conservative use of the sample contributed heavily to this track’s success (the ICONIC Kenny Carpenter played this to a very receptive crowd at LeBain just last night!). All in all – awesome tracks and  pretty much staples in my arsenal!

We’d also like to give a nod to “Lea, Muzikman Edition, Tweety – Songbird (Oscar P Afro Rework)” (#8, @ 35:00). If you’re looking for well done, well thought out Afro House you might want to check this out. A heavy yet subdued beat with deeply soulful vocals sitting perfectly in the mix. This is another one (like the Dominique Fils-Aime track we mentioned earlier) that’s perfect for breaking up a set without losing the crowd!

As usual, The Zodiac Thump is all about music. PERIOD. These mixes feature everything from Soulful to Afro to Tech to Techno – it’s pretty much all in there.  In this mix, we’ve got tracks from DJ Kemit & The Lounge Lizards, Josh Wink featuring Ursula Rucker with Louie Vega contributing his part to an awesome remix package, Coflo, Thommy Davis, Dany Cohiba, Norty Cotto – and much more!  We don’t care about release dates – whether it’s brand new or came out last year – if it’s hot, it’s hot! As usual – free download, so enjoy!

….heeeey, y’all! Hope you’re having an amazing summer so far – as we go into the last part of summer, we continue to bring you the heat every month! So let’s get down to business, shall we?

Our first feature track is “Tasha LaRae & DJ Spen – Wish I Didn’t Miss You”  with none other than DJ Beloved on the remix! Listen, the airwaves are littered with remakes – some are good, some…well, some could use some work, but THIS?? This remake right here? THIS does the original such justice that it was hard to decide which mix I wanted to play! You know how Quantize brings it – stellar production, insane vocals, and they only pick the BEST for their remixes. The original mixes are dope and very true to the original song, but for my latest mix – I chose Beloved’s remix because it is soulful – yet goes HARD on the floor (track #2)

As the mix goes on, it transitions from soulful to tech and for our second feature – I’d like to present to you the closing track “Oliver Dollar, Nils Ohmann – John’s Church (Cassius XXL Remix)... ok, this is one of those joints where had it not been for the remix, this track would have probably passed under my radar. Awesome work to Oliver and Nils and great job to legendary duo Cassius (RIP Phillippe Zdar)…

….aaaaaand we’re back! We apologize for not bringing you a mix last month – we truly appreciate you hanging in there with us! We had some drastic system configurations last month and now we’re ready for action! So let’s get down to business, shall we?

Our first feature track is “Praying For You (Album Mix)” from the looooooooooooooooong anticipated Jasper Street Co. album “Rejoicing“! Listen, if you’ve been out to the club in the last 4 months, you’ve been assaulted with this track only to rush home and not be able to find it ANYWHERE. Well, it’s finally here – and not a minute too soon, I was gettin’ ready to write Nervous a terse email demanding this track, LOLOL. No, I’m kidding, ut really – this track has been lighting up the clubs for months. If you like Soulful House done CORRECTLY, then look no further than this 11 track album! Featuring artists such as Kenny Bobien, Byron Stingily (that’s Principal Stingily to some of your kids, LOL), and Dawn Tallman, Teddy Douglas and DJ Spen show us why their pedigree is unimpeachable! But um, y’all think y’all slick tho – this album is cool n’ all that, but imma need them OTHER mixes of “Praying For You” – you know good n’ well what I’m talking about – Louie Vega been spinnin’ them shits for months @ Expansions – y’all holding out!!! Honestly, though look out for “You’re My Latest, My Greatest Inspiration” – a near PERFECT remake that will leave you in tears if it catches you on the right dancefloor and in the right mood. It is pure elevation. Oh! and “My Soul Is a Witness” – well, let’s just say if you enjoyed the “Track & Feel Events” EP that came out on Nervous a whopping 26 years ago (wow, right?), then you will LOOOOOVE this track! Trust me.

For our second feature – it’s not so much a track as it appears to be somewhat of a movement... seriously, can we talk about the sheer amount of work Kev Dot Kruz is putting in???? Always one to produce outside the box aesthetically, dude has been putting in WORK. He’s been quietly putting out a steady stream of Deep Tech, Afro Tech, Dark Tech, Techno, and other stuff you just have to hear – and he’s been releasing like 90% of it FREE on Soundcloud on his new “Afro Riddims” label!! Since those my folks, maybe I’m biased, but check it out for yourself! We try out his “Flower Underground” track (#16) in this mix.

Another dope producer, colleague, and all around awesome dude that really should be mentioned is none other than Harry Soto! Harry’s been making noise – and quite a bit of it, too! Another one not one to be constricted by genre, this time Harry brings us a deep techno vibe that will rattle your speakers! Check out “Techno Gods” (#17).

And we CERTAINLY can’t let y’all go without mentioning our closing track – “Work That Body”  – the debut track from the globetrotting DJ Q featuring none other than THE House diva herself – Barbara Tucker! Most of you in Italy, Spain, England, and many other spots across the world know DJ Q as Barbara Tucker’s touring DJ – and now you get to hear a DIFFERENT side of DJ Q. Ladies, gennelmen, and other identified – we have a PROBLEM!! Expect more from this up and coming producer, but until then, check out “Work That Body” (with Georgie Porgie on the co-production!) (#18) and get into what you hear!

As usual, The Zodiac Thump is all about music. PERIOD. These mixes feature everything from Soulful to Afro to Tech to Techno – it’s pretty much all in there.  In this mix, we’ve got tracks from Zo!, Dean Zepherin, Todd Terry, Joeski, Alex Peace – and much more!  As usual – free download, so enjoy!

….aaaaaand we’re back! Last month we brought you Spring Warfare and this month we bring you Spring Warfare Part TWO! And we got some treats for you! Let’s get started with our feature tracks, shall we?

Weaving Genres Vol. Two: Unreleased Versions

Our first feature track – well, it’s not so much a featured “track” as it is a couple of tracks from a featured compilation! This month we spotlight Hector Romero’s “Weaving Genres Vol. 2: Unreleased Versions“! This 18 track compilation features artists such as Paso Doble DJ Vivona, Satoshi Tomie, Quentin Harris – and many other notable contributions from industry vets like David Morales to up and coming industry blazers such as Mikki Afflick and Ritmo Y Tumbao! Speaking of which – the first selection we decided to snatch off this amazing compilation is none other than “Thunder Drum Dance feat. Ritmo Y Tumbao” by Mikki Afflick with a deep, rolling bassline reminiscent of Ecstasy’s “Don’t Play Me Raw” or Hercules “7 Ways” followed by “Dejalo Que Salga” by Peppe Citarella & Mijangos. Honestly, you could set fire to the dancefloor just spinning from this compilation alone! Look for more selections from this compilation in future mixes!

For our second feature – it’s not so much a track as it appears to be somewhat of a movement... seriously, can we talk about the genius of Chicago Afrobeat Project????? Some music touches your gut, some beats reach your feet…Chicago Afrobeat Project manages to reach down and touch the pulse of the ancestors. Indigenous, yet up to date and innovative, the “Future Rootz” album is another one that can be played head to toe. With Sol Power All Stars on the Remix, “Cut The Infection” delivers, punching through the crowd as a beat to request. I would STRONGLY suggest copping this!

This mix – like pretty much all of my mixes – tends to do exactly what Hector referenced in the title of his compilation – and that is to weave genres. This mix features everything from Soulful to Afro to Tech to Techno – it’s pretty much all in there. We got tracks from Sevader, Juanito, BLAQWELL, Todd Terry, Diezel, we got a couple joints off the Quantize Miami Sampler Compiled & Mixed by DJ Spen on here (#1, #11) – and much more!  As usual – free download, so enjoy!

Hey, everybody! We apologize for the brief hiatus, but we are BACK – and guess what? We brought WEAPONS.

Our feature track for this mix is none other than Ralf Gum f. Monique Bingham – “Claudette (Album Version)” – a tribute to Claudette Colvin, a nurse and pioneer of the Civil Rights movement. Colvin is widely known for refusing to give up her seat to a white woman on a segregated bus nearly a year before her more popular contemporary and face of the movement, Rosa Parks. Black leaders refused to acknowledge her pioneering act of defiance due to her being an unwed expectant mother (reportedly by a married man) at the time of her arrest at age 15.

In Philip Hoose’s book, “Claudette Colvin: Twice Towards Justice“, Colvin said, “My mother told me to be quiet about what I did. She told me to let Rosa be the one: white people aren’t going to bother Rosa, they like her

Claudette Colvin

Colvin suffered in so many ways from both white people and the people that were supposed to be there for her (you know – Black  people), that it brings tears to your eyes just reading her story. I’ve always thought highly of Monique Bingham, but now I have a new found “awe” of her depth. Thank you, Monique – for acknowledging this amazing womanLove this whole album!

Another track I wanted to talk about is “Wele” by Brad Machado. Seriously, this is not even about just the track – it’s about ALL of the material coming from the Arawakan label. This is an example of TIMELESS music – this came out last year, but DEMANDED to be in the mix – even among all the new material from Arawakan that I have to sift through. THAT’S how you build legacy. Big shout to the beautiful husband and wife team – Vic and Nena Hernandez – when you hear these names, you are hearing Arawakan! In addition to that dope Ralf Gum track, this month we also bring you music from Hondo Vega, Doug Gomez, DeMajor, Ray MD, and many more! A little soulful, a little afro, a little classic house, a little techno…it’s all in there! As usual – free download, so enjoy!

Hey, everybody! As you probably saw – there was no House mix for January…and for a very special (but sad) reason. This month we’re going to deviate from our usual program  (there will plenty of that from here on out) due to the death of a dear friend, Patrick Willoughby. Some may know him, but many have encountered him. Patrick was a major influence for DJs in NYC from the late 70’s all the way through the 90’s. Most known for his amazing work as buyer/manager of Barry’s Records & Tapes, which was located at 119. E. 23rd St. in NYC until it was torn down in 2003 – he also managed other music shops throughout Brooklyn. In honor of his life, this mix is all classics! Patrick loved the divas that delivered, so artists such as First Choice, Grace Jones, and Chaka Khan will feature heavily in this mix.

Barry’s Records & Tapes – 119 E. 23rd Street just before it was torn down in 2003

There are tasteful edits in this mix by Dimitri from Paris, Danny Krivit, Joe Clausell and of course – John Morales for a little updated flavor. Patrick Willoughby was a devout Buddhist – but he was also a highly influential taste maker. He literally told New York DJs what to buy for three decades! He was so influential in curating music for the DJs here in New York that labels/distribution companies such as Mercury, Elektra, and Columbia have awarded him silver and gold plaques for his outstanding sales. There is literally nothing in this mix that Patrick hasn’t curated…while I was still in elementary school! He was my unofficial mentor and even casually hearing him talk about his adventures in the music biz taught me quite a bit. I know this is selfish, but I had so much more to learn from him.

RIP Patrick Willoughby

While this mix is missing many elements that Patrick would have loved (there’s no Phyllis Hyman, no Regina Belle, Vanessa Williams, etc. – a lot of stuff is missing), I hope I at least did him some kind of justice.

I agonized for weeks about what to put in this mix. This is easily one of the most important mixes I’m going to do this year so selection was paramount – I mean, when I tell you I agonized over what to put into this mix…then one morning I found just one record on the floor (it had somehow fallen out of my bookcase) – it was First Choice’s “Armed and Extremely Dangerous” album…so I grinned and said, “okay” – so look for plenty of First Choice in this mix, including “Love & Happiness” off that very album!  Yes, I went into the vinyl for this mix (vinyl that was, ironically, partially curated by Patrick!)

Til later, Patrick – lemme know if you like the mix. 🙂

Enjoy the mix folks and download it at your leisure! If you remember Patrick and would like to say a few words, drop a comment here or on Facebook!

Enjoy! 🙂

Our featured song for this month is :  Dawn Souluvn Williams – Feel The Fire (The BPM Fire Mix) (#2 on the list). Listen – Dawn is NOT out here playing with y’all – she took NO prisoners with her amazing rendition of a Stephanie Mills classic! Another song/artist I’d like to shout out is Saliva Commandos ft. Kelly Diniz – Promesa (Oscar G 305 Drum Dub) (#6 in the mix)…man, look – Saliva Commandos has been consistently putting out bangers (put some respeck on his name, LOL!)…and this track with the lovely Kelly Diniz (The Network) is no exception! This originally came out a few months ago (check out the original – it’s siiiiick), and when Oscar G got a hold of it – woooow…Saliva Commandos is just one of those artists that you purchase and listen to later – because you KNOW it’ll be dope!

We got a bunch of other treats on here for you, too! We got complete MADNESS from Aj Lora, DJ Angelo, Loves Last Episode – and sooooo many more so give it a listen!

What’s up y’all!! Lawd, I know I know – this is wiiiiiiiiild late (as Libras tend to be, LOL) but we promise you it was worth the wait! We want to extend our sincere gratitude for all the support for these mixes! The response has truly been amazing! We appreciate the support and the love and we DON’T take it for granted!  We want to continue our tradition of bringing you HEAT, so without further ado – let’s get this show on the road!

Our featured song for this month is :  David Morales, blondwearingblack – Hideaway (Redzone Mix) (#4 on the list). This Grammy Award winning DJ/Producer doesn’t know who I am, but he’s been one of my unofficial mentors for years (I’m probably not the only DJ/Producer to say that). He spins and produces for the world! There is almost nowhere on this planet that he has not made people dance. Right now our legend, our icon, our mentor – is in a bit of trouble in Japan. Most of you have heard so I’m not going to repeat it and give it energy. I just want our David back and THAT’S the energy I’m sending! “Hideaway” – featuring the vocals of blondwearingblack – is systemic of a DM production. It’s big room, yet rooted in the underground. It can be played in Ibiza, but can also be played at a loft party in Brooklyn. This is REALLY hard to pull off and yet Morales has mastered it, lately taking it back to the deep underground vibe of Club Redzone (his alma mater)

Another song I’d like to shout out is Coflo, Gyrefunk – Fazendo Coisas (Original Mix) (#6 in the mix)…this one actually SOUNDS like it tastes good, if you understand what I’m saying…it has a rich, savory flavor to it, you know? And it WORKS on the floor – I promise you it does…also like to give a BIG shout out to Ray D – the stuff he’s been releasing is so hot he actually appears in the mix twice!

We got a bunch of other treats on here for you, too! It’s Libra season and this is the Libra Edition of the Zodiac Thump! We go a little harder this month and dig deep for those beats – we got Joeski, Saliva Commandos, Para People, Carlos Francisco – and sooooo many more so give it a listen!

Enjoy the mix folks and if you like what you’re hearing and want to show your appreciation – feel free to donate a little something to the DJ (link below)!

What’s up y’all!! Lawd, it’s September and it’s Virgo season – basically a dress rehearsal for Libra season, LOL (jk) We want to extend our sincere gratitude for all the support for these mixes! The response has truly been amazing! We appreciate the support and the love and we DON’T take it for granted!  We want to continue our tradition of bringing you HEAT, so without further ado – let’s get this show on the road!

Our featured song for this month is :  Diephuis, Jephte Guillame, Barbara Gwanmesia – Baba M’fa Nijka (Baba M’fa Njika Vocal) (#12 on the list). First of all, I can’t even pronounce this but the sickness of this track is just unbelievable! If you listen to this at work, I swear to gawd you’re gonna need to excuse yourself for a minute when this comes in – it’s really that powerful! It’s a track befitting the aesthetic of the Shelter label – and of course, you put Diephuis and Jephte Guillame together – expect madness.

But make NO mistake – another song I’d like to shout out is Angel Negron, Harry Soto – Santo Africa (Santosoto Remix) (#11 in the mix)..listen, this comes in just before that “Baba” joint and this just screams “FLOORWORK” – because you will have no choice when you hear this Santosoto Mix!

We got a bunch of other treats on here for you, too. Dana Weaver has been putting in WORK. This isn’t her first time falling into this mix – and it won’t be the last! We got her singing about “Freedom” – and she’s teamed up with the amazing Doug Gomez, so you know what to expect! We got some new heat from Lilac Jeans (I think it’s about time to feature them – these dudes REALLY understand the spirit of House). Also featured in the mix is a new track from yours, truly – LibraClassic! called “A Lovely Noise”! Due to drop exclusively on Traxsource on September 28th (Worldwide on October 12th). Folks who are members of the Zodiac Thump DJ List will get promos tomorrow morning at 9:30am!

Enjoy the mix folks and if you like what you’re hearing and want to show your appreciation – feel free to donate a little something to the DJ (link below)!

What’s up y’all!! Lawd, it’s August and all the Leos are out roaring – I see y’all, LOL! We want to extend our sincere gratitude for all the support for these mixes! The response has been amazing! We appreciate the support and the love and we DON’T take it for granted!  Once again, we got some HEAT for y’all so let’s get right down to business, shall we?

Our featured song for this month is :  Chelsea Como, Jackio, Shino Blackk – TTYD (Blackkdraft Mix). First of all, we’ve picked a song, but what we really want to discuss is Producer/DJ Shino Blackk! Seriously, he’s been putting out amazing work and repping Philly HARD, and this is no exception! In a world of Soulful House tracks that tend to sound depressingly similar to everybody else’s Soulful House track – Shino’s take on Soulful House is a BREATH OF FRESH AIR! “TTYD” (Things That You Do) – though obviously Soulful House – actually FLEW to the number one spot on Traxsource’s Afro Chart (labeling matters). Charted and supported by Tony Humphries, Mr. V, OVEOUS, Lenny Fontana, Oscar P – pretty much everybody! You name em – they charted it! So if you’re the one person on earth who hasn’t purchased it – go do it now and apologize to yourself and your dancers, LOL!

Check out more of Shino’s work right here!

Another song I’d like to shout out is Byron J. Moore, Ian Friday – Starchild (Libation Vox Mix by Ian Friday)…listen, when Ian Friday came to The Funktion House here in Brooklyn last month for a live appearance on The Network BK last month (hosted by Hector Romero, Kelly Diniz, and Beatport), he played this and I was DONE! I nearly lost my mind. This remake of the Level 42 classic was beautifully executed (I think Ian mentioned he worked with Level 42 themselves on this? IDK, but he is a GENIUS and Byron slayed this vocal).

Speaking of Hector Romero, funny story: just a few weeks ago I put out a DJ APB (All Points Bulletin) for a track I had heard in many MANY clubs but couldn’t put my finger on the title, so I put up a YouTube video of the iconic Derrick Extravaganza voguing DOWN to it. First, turns out I actually HAD the track but didn’t know the name of it (LOL). Second – it also turns out that Hector actually voiced the infamous words “Necessito Maaaaaaaasss” on the classic track in question – “The Colombian Drum Cartel – The Shipment”  !! I know, right??? How cool is that? Surrounded by all this legendary talent

….oh, and watch out for Jon Mavek.  He’s not here to play with y’all. Don’t say you haven’t been warned, LOL…

We got a bunch of other treats on here for you, too. We got some wicked work from Deva Mahal along with DJ Spen and Reelsoul, some HEAT from Timmy Regisford, Norty Cotto and Oscar P, Fat Nek, The SyntheTigers – oh, just get into it already, LOLOL!

Out Now!

As usual – with songs that I consider “edits”, I also credit the original artist because – let’s be honest – if it wasn’t for them, you wouldn’t actually have a track, so – you know *shrugs*.

Enjoy! 🙂
